‘Tis the season…to give thanks
Tax Fairness for Americans Abroad has a lot to be thankful for this year.
We thank the members of Congress and their staffs who have sympathized with our stories of the many ways U.S. tax and financial services laws harm the interests of Americans abroad and prevent us from living normal lives. We thank in particular those members of Congress and staffers who have helped us, first by sharing advice, then by helping us translate our proposal for residence-based taxation from layman’s language into legislative language and pressure-testing it to make sure it realistic.
We thank Donald Trump for having been the first presidential candidate to publicly pledge to “end double-taxation” for Americans abroad. We thank Republicans Overseas for having brought the issue to his ear. We thank Vice-President Kamala Harris for having acknowledged our concerns and demonstrated that there is bipartisan support for solutions that would best address our concerns—and we thank Democrats Abroad for keeping the problems associated with taxation on the basis of citizenship on their radar screens.
We thank the members of our Board, all of whom are volunteers, for devoting countless hours to helping us achieve consensus on a proposal that could enjoy bipartisan support and address the needs of all Americans abroad, many of whom face very different issues.
We thank Fabien Lehagre, the President of the Association of Accidental Americans, and the members of his association, for having raised more than $100,000 to fund a laser-focused campaign for residence-based taxation.
We thank the 100+ donors who have continued to support our cause financially, some with monthly recurring donations. (Every contribution helps!)
We thank the handful of hard-core volunteers (not all pictured; some prefer to remain anonymous) who have helped us tell their stories, understand the intricacies of U.S. tax law, develop creative content, scale as we grew, and share our content on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X. We thank our thousands of social media followers and their help spreading our message of hope to more Americans abroad.
We thank our advisers at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, who have provided invaluable advice and support navigating Congress and Washington, D.C. in general.
We thank organizations such as the National Taxpayers Union, The Association of Americans Resident Overseas and FAWCO for actively helping us put our message in front of their members.
We thank the media and individual journalists who have taken the time to understand our issue and explain it to others.
Finally, looking to the year ahead, we thank in advance those members of Congress and Congressional staffers whom we have not yet had the pleasure of meeting and whose support we will need to achieve residence-based taxation in 2025. The cause is just. Our proposal presents a pragmatic and bipartisan path forward. It’s time to end the double taxation of Americans abroad and all the financial discrimination, high costs and hassles that come with it.
Happy holidays and Best Wishes for the vision of tax fairness for Americans abroad in 2025!
