The Globe And Mail - U.S. bill could end income tax nightmare for Americans living abroad

If approved, the measure would allow hundreds of thousands of Canadians with U.S. citizenship to avoid onerous U.S. tax-reporting obligations that advisers say currently force even people with moderate incomes to spend thousands of dollars a year on accountants.

“For the first time in our lifetimes, Americans abroad can see the light at the end of the long, dark tunnel that has cost them huge amounts,” said Brandon Mitchener, executive director of Tax Fairness for Americans Abroad, a group of expatriates that assisted Mr. LaHood in drafting the bill.

Mr. LaHood’s current plan, according to information shared on his website, is to gather feedback on the bill ahead of its reintroduction next year, after the newly elected Congress convenes. The Republican hopes the measure will be included in a broader tax package then.
